Phaius is a genus of large, mostly terrestrial orchids, i.e meaning that they grow along the ground, of approximately 30 species that produce tall spikes of showy flowers. They are found in tropical Asia, into China, Japan, Australia, and west to Africa and Madagascar.  The most commonly cultivated since the late 1700's is P. tankervilliae commonly known as the nuns cap orchid. Phaius orchids produce beautifully scented flowers that last for a long time in the spring.
